Waiting Room Etiquette

Written by: Jenn Johnson
They say, you can compare a restaurant’s kitchen by how the bathrooms are kept. If the bathrooms are dirty, the kitchen may be dirty. If the bathrooms are tidy and clean, the kitchen is tidy and clean.

So what does this have to do with your business’s waiting room?

If your waiting room looks unorganized then your business may be interpreted as the same from a consumer viewpoint. If your waiting room is clean and tidy, then your shop duties are on par. Essentially, you are focusing on areas where customers are in your care and they have time to think about the services they are receiving. We want to make certain they are comfortable and happy!

This may be a myth or an over exaggerated example, however, it just means that we need to pay attention to areas that customers may be evaluating our practices. Arguably, most important of which, is the waiting room. We’ve provided you with a few quick tips to minimize error and maximize positive evaluations. We suggest choosing a day to thoroughly inspect the waiting room area to make certain it is 100% flawless and make it a habit to quickly check the waiting room each morning before unlocking the doors.

Entertainment

What is your method of entertaining those who visit your waiting room?

Do you have a television? If so, make certain that the channels your visitors have exposure to are G or PG rated.  Also, make certain the remote is in good condition. Nothing is worse than trying to operate a remote that is missing buttons or that doesn’t even work.

Do you have magazines? If so, make certain that no one has written in the magazines or drawn inappropriate pictures on the magazines.

Cleanliness

Did you notice the dust bunny growing by the minute in the far corner of your waiting room? You may not, but your customer was able to spot the bunny. Make certain the waiting room is clean, not only the areas that are the most visual but the areas that are hard to reach.

Do you have antibacterial hand gel in your waiting room? This may be a great item to place on the coffee table or side table of your waiting room. Germs spread quickly and can be done so in a waiting room. It is a subliminal way to promote cleanliness!

Without a doubt, visitors enjoy a waiting room with coffee, water or soda options. However, make certain that the sugar & creamer is filled and the coffee is ready to brew. Also, check on the inventory of the cups. Nothing is worse than seeing all the wonderful beverage options and being out of cups!
