Users Can Upload Videos to Google Maps Listings

New feature roll out on Google Maps! This is a test roll-out currently being offered to ‘Local Guides on Android devices’….so a very small audience at this moment. But we think this is something you need to be made aware of & could play a larger impact for your business in the future.

Users (not business owners) will now be getting the opportunity to capture a 10-30 second video using their phones in which they can upload the video to the business’ local listing – yup, it’ll be public. This video can be anything… a video of the shop, a video made by a guy tire shopping, a video of an individual irritated by the long wait… Ah, the possibilities are really endless & it’s actually got me a little anxious.

But before we go into a panic, this can really work in our favor. If this is a successful roll out, businesses may get the opportunity to feature their very own videos & we’ve got tons for ya! Fingers crossed that’s where this is headed.

But in the meantime, we’re closely watching your business’ listings to see if that capability is added. We will also be monitoring whether or not users are actually uploading videos to your business listing and what is being said/filmed.

This is one of the major reasons why I think it’s so important that y’all have people like us… not patting ourselves on the back or anything… but I just know new rollouts like this are not being acknowledged by our competitors, and this is going to be so important, especially for your reputation…. If a picture is worth a 1,000 words… what’s a video worth!? It can say a lot in a short time and it’s important we’re ahead of the curve.

If you have an Android device, you’re a Local Guide & have stumbled across a business listing on your phone that has this new rollout… here’s how you can add your very own video –

How to create a video when you’re on location: (on Android device)

  • Search and select a place on Google Maps
  • Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
  • Tap “Camera” and hold the shutter button for up to 10 seconds

How to upload a video that’s already on your device:

  • Search and select a place on Google Maps
  • Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
  • Tap “Folder” and select a video. Only the first 30 seconds of a video can be added.

Want to see it in action? Here’s an example on our buddy, Mike Blumenthals’ blog of what a user uploaded video could look like (scroll down a little, it’s in his blog post)! We will keep you in the loop! What do you guys think? Is it a good idea? Let us know!
