Social Media – Have Fun with it!

A lot of times, people get intimidated by social media. What is this thumbs-up button? Who just tweeted me? What on earth does a pound sign mean? You pinned what?

Deep breaths!

Social media can totally be overwhelming. Just looking at the questions above is a bit crazy. The world of social media has its own lingo and it’s growing by the day. The word ‘selfie’ is actually in the Oxford Dictionary! (Selfie | ˈselfē | Noun: A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.) Why on earth would a tire dealer need social media? For online exposure! To DOMINATE your information space.

Let’s begin with the social media platforms that are the most useful to the tire / automotive industry. Please note this is a very simple summary. For more in depth detail, please reach out to your account manager.

Facebook: Facebook is considered the most important because it can be indexed on search engines.  The profile needs to be completely filled out and include a link to the main website. (Have no fear, the link to the main website in the Facebook profile will not take away from rankings of the main site.) On Facebook, users can not only ‘like’ your business page but they can also ‘like’ a post, comment on a post or share a post.

Twitter: Twitter is considered a tool for microblogging. (Microblogging is a broadcast medium that exists in the form of blogging.) The trick to Twitter is to keep your message under 140 characters, hitting the space bar is considered a character.   The pound sign, also known as a hashtag (#) originally was used on Twitter. The hashtag is another way to express thoughts or even participate in a conversation. You can follow the account managers, Colleen, Sarah & Jenn on twitter with the hashtag #TireGals OR @UprightTire.

Pinterest: Pinterest is pinboard sharing social media platform, hence the term, pin. The great thing about Pinterest is that not only is it great to share photos and ideas, but the link is included. Within Pinterest is a search function. This search function indexes pins from across the site. Looking for a do-it-yourself tire swing project? You’ll want to turn to Pinterest.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to social media is to maintain it! Nothing is worse than stumbling upon a social media page and it’s not even updated. This makes the customer wonder if they are even still in business. Social media is supposed to be FUN! The more you familiarize yourself with the platform, the more you’ll understand. Oh, and the great thing about social media, is that 80 percent of the posts are to be ‘fun’ and 20% are to be about your business!
